Act 3 Scene 3

Cassio and Desdemona are talking, and Desdemona promises she will try to help Cassio get reinstated as lieutenant. But their conversation is cut short by the arrival of Othello.

As Desdemona leaves, Iago tells that Cassio may not be as honest as he seems, and that Othello should not get jealous. Othello says that he would need proof of a relationship between the two, and dismisses Iago's idea that they are involved.

Iago then leaves. When Othello complains of a headache, she wipe his head with a strawberry embroidered handkerchief which was Othello's first gift to her and is very precious to both. But Othello brushes it away. It then falls to the ground unnoticed, only to be found by Emilia when the couple has left. Iago than demands and takes the handkerchief.

Act 3 Scene 4

Desdemona is still trying to plead Cassio's case, and sends the Clown to bring him. Meanwhile, she is also worried about the loss of her handkerchief. When Othello enters, he asks her for it, and she says it may be lost. Othello then tells Desdemona the story of the magical powers of the handkerchief, and that if it is lost, horrible things will happen to the owner. After realizing she does not have it, Othello angrily leaves. Cassio again asks her to help him get the lieutenancy back, but she must postpone her efforts due to Othello's bad mood. After everyone has left, Cassio meets with Bianca, his mistress and asks her to make a copy of the handkerchief (Desdemona's ) that he found in his room.

Othello then reenters, full of the doubt which Iago has planted in his mind, and demands proof. Cleverly using the handkerchief, Iago states that he saw Cassio with it, and this proof enough for Othello. Othello and Iago than plot a revenge against the two, and Othello then appoints Iago as his lieutenant.
